Louise Butler | Deception Island

Louise Butler is a visual artist, specializing in landscape. Her methods of investigation take form in multidisciplinary areas, as her practice flows between painting, sculpture and performance.
Butler is drawn to and intrigued by the natural environment, dramatic scenery of majestic landscape, mountains, islands and the surrounding elements, both at home and abroad. During her travels her search for what she considers ‘ideal locations for the adventure tourist,’ these are the places with monumental views of natural beauty in all its harshness and wonderment.
As such, she is a tourist who strives for a unique landscape. For many of us, the relationship we have with nature is ambivalent. It is present in our everyday life, even in vast quantities in some countries, and it seems our access to nature is boundless. Her work is about the view of nature from within society. Butler anticipates points of conflict in the landscape related to commercialisation. Nature as commodity is transformed into a spectacle to admire from very close. The idyllic land has now been framed for us. Landscape is the object to be consumed.
Butler is currently living and working in Dublin, and recently graduated from KHiB in Norway with an MFA in 2017. From which she was awarded BHK Kunststudenttsstipend Award and Kulturrådet Award from the Arts Council of Norway. She received her BA from NCAD in 2006 and has been showing regularly in and around Ireland since 2004 and Norway since 2015. Solo shows include Finders of Islands in Ballina Arts Centre, Co Mayo and Journey to Nimbus in Talbot Gallery, Dublin. Her artwork is represented in the permanent collection of the OPW, in private collections throughout Europe and Canada. She also is director and curator of the most remote art gallery in Norway, situated on top of the mountain, Galleri Kronborg.
