In the 19th century there existed a repertoire of traditional poses that were used in narrative and history paintings that art students were expected to learn. These poses were included as part of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Charles Bargue’s Cours de Dessin which was designed for students at the École des Beaux-Arts. The poses had rhetorical and allegorical purposes and also included Biblical and historical fifigures. The work infused the human form with meaning and depth which is what I intend to develop in working with this collection.
The work itself will consist of paintings and drawings made primarily from the life model with drawings from the Cours de Dessin itself. These paintings and drawings of various sizes and degrees of finish will comprise the body of work which I hope to show.
