From Wednesday 5th August to Sunday 16th August 2009

Signal Arts Centre is pleased to present this collection of work by Irish artist Saskia Vermeulen. She graduated from the Institute of Art Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire with a BA (First Class Honours) in Visual Arts Practice. Saskia's practice is based in moving image, installation and photography work. During the last four years she has exhibited regularly in both group and selected exhibitions including the Mermaid Greenstar Exhibitions 2006, 2007 and 2008. Her work has also been exhibited nationwide following her video submission to the R.D.S. Student Arts Award 2006. Most notably she received the Mermaid Greenstar 2008 Arts Award for the stop-motion animation Untitled (2008).

Saskia's practice comprises of photographs, moving images and installations which aim to speak from the margins of ruling sensibilities, creating visceral experiences that are not digested or pre-explained. The resulting work is both fantastical and tied to a possible truth filtered through the real experience of its making. Her work addresses the human relationship with the contemporary blurring of fact and fiction. The fictitious landscapes created invite us to enter a space of discovery and adaptation, yet border on disappointment and a longing for truth. Such small, sublime interludes of narrative impossibility are tempered by enough tragicomedy to portray a critical slapstick perspective on life's pitfalls.

Opening Reception: Thursday 6th August 7-9pm
