Terri Levine | The Beginning of Devotion
28 April – 11 May 2025 | Signal Arts Centre
Signal Arts Centre is pleased to present The Beginning of Devotion, the debut solo exhibition by painter Terri Levine. Running from 28 April to 11 May 2025, with an opening reception on 2 May from 7–9 pm, this intimate and compelling body of work explores the emotional, physical, and psychological terrain of early motherhood.
Working in oil, Terri captures moments of stillness rendered with layered colour, scumbling, and glazing, allowing for rich interplay between abstraction and representation. This series, her first, reflects on the transience and intensity of breastfeeding, foregrounding the textures of skin, light, and proximity. The exhibition plays with the temporal frameworks that dominate new parenthood—months, trimesters, feed schedules—and the sense of time both fragmented and elongated.
Created mostly at night and during her child’s naps, these paintings emerge from the blurred boundaries between caregiving and creativity and are reflections on how care reshapes perception and pace. The Beginning of Devotion offers a visual echo of maternal experience—vulnerable, luminous, and defiantly present
Opening Reception: Friday 2nd May 2025, 7pm to 9pm
