The Hodges Effect | The Radiant Point

THE HODGES EFFECT: THE RADIANT POINT

A Campaign for an International Meteorite Awareness Day for Ann Hodges.

In recognition of the 68th anniversary of the Ann Hodges meteor strike event (occurred November 30, 1954, in Oak Grove, Alabama) a series of exhibitions and a public talk is scheduled to consider the event. The lecture will occur LIVE in-person at University of Alabama (and virtually in Florida and Ireland) on November 29th at 1PM Alabama, 2PM Florida, and 7PM Bray and Cork, Ireland (hosted virtually by Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork Ireland) discussing the significance of this historic event and encouraging the public to take part in a campaign to lobby the U.N. for an International Meteorite Awareness Day for Ann Hodges. (Watch Livestream here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBJVh0PGEfY) It is notable that University of Alabama hosts this talk since the university has the distinction of holding the actual Sylacauga Meteorite in their collection (the actual meteorite that struck Ann Hodges in 1954). In addition, the group will discuss the phenomenon known as Hodges Effect which is defined as:
THE HODGES EFFECT (Miller/ Taylor 2021) can be described as an existential crisis of being that may occur after a sudden collision between a Homosapien subject and extra-terrestrial materials. The Hodges Effect is an emerging creative concept in the domain of Homosapien encounters and current responses to environmental change. Exhibitions and public campaigns at Signal Art Centre in Bray, Ireland, Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork Ireland, and a display at the University of Florida College of Fine Art will coincide with this year’s petition, letter-writing campaign, and live and virtual public lecture at University of Alabama. Since 2021, billboards, free public art/science lectures, a field guide, outreach materials, drawings, photographs, performances and letter-writing activism have all been included throughout Ireland, the U.K. Designer Connie Hwang (U.S.) and artists Sean Miller (U.S.) and Dr. Sean Taylor (Ireland) are the team responsible for developing the Hodges Effect project which has received support from Blackrock Castle Observatory, National Sculpture Factory of Ireland, University of Alabama, and University of Florida.
