From Wednesday 3rd August to Sunday 14th August 2011

Signal Arts Centre is please to present this first solo exhibition by artist Kathryn Ryan.

Kathryn graduated in Fine Art (B.A. Hons) from Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. Kathryn has exhibited her work in several group shows throughout Dublin and Wickow such as Mermaid Arts Centre, The Black Loft and Broadstone Studios. She was commissioned by CSE, Office of Public Works and Rocket Productions.

Kathryn Ryan's work as an artist is primarily an ongoing study of things ageing. She is drawn to things that are old, rusting with age, neglected and worn. Since she moved to Wicklow, she studied her surroundings and began working on the Ingress Series of mixed media paintings, focusing on old windows, doors and farm buildings. Her main interest is in the natural ageing, deterioration as well as the inevitable abandonment of the buildings. Their absence of occupancy for what ever reasons, represents sadness for her, while evoking a sense of beauty in their silence.

This show will display the familiar things which are surrounding us from different angles using different materials techniques and textures. The result cannot be planned in advance because the work changes and evolves to something completely unrelated to the artist's initial plan during the process. It is usually the investigation process in order to achieve an end result that is the most interesting for her.

Opening Reception: Friday 5th August 7-9pm.
